Juxtapositions

29th June - 31st July

Hannah Downton

Hannah Downton is a collage and graphic artist based in south east London. Originally from Brighton, Hannah studied a BA in Printed Textile Design at Central Saint Martin’s, graduating in 2012.
The inspiration for her work comes from mid 20th century graphic design, typography and printed ephemera. Using a combination of materials, predominantly repurposed vintage paper stock, coloured surfaces and silk screen prints, Hannah composes one-off, mixed media collages, often working on commissions.

Juxtapositions, an exhibition of collage and collections, is her first exhibition showcasing this body of work and she’s delighted to be sharing the space at Curious Kudu with her mother Sarah Gamble, who is also an established collage artist.

Sarah Gamble

Sarah Gamble graduated in Graphic Design from Wolverhampton Polytechnic, and has an MA in Sequential Design and Illustration from Brighton University. She taught in colleges for 30 years in Brighton and Haywards Heath, and now works from her studio in Rodmell, East Sussex.

Sarah’s collages utilise elements from her vast collection of source materials, and whilst some pieces refer to memory (family, work and play), her main interest is in mid 20th century technology and capturing the essence of these machines: typewriters, radios, analogue cameras and record players are her primary sources of inspiration. Her original pieces are assemblages constructed from disused vintage packaging, old board games, vinyl records, stationery, plastic tokens and mathematical instruments, which are then photographed and produced as digital prints.

Juxtaposition, patina and contrast play a major part in her work, as she constantly re-works and distorts, experimenting with colour, surface, fragments and leftovers.
